Cafod Gap Year Opportunity!

CAFOD are organising an exciting Gap Year opportunity  which may be of interest to young people who have been on a gap year team this year and looking for a slightly different challenge, are completing their studies, and eant to live a gap year with a difference!

“Step Into The Gap” (SITG) is a gap year opportunity with a real difference.

For young adults aged 18-30: placements from September 2012 – July 2013. The volunteers will live in community, work with young people in the UK for the year, and have a 6 week international experience at the start of 2013.

The volunteers will be part of one of our UK partner bases (currently St. Mary’s Chaplaincy Team in Blackpool, in Salford with the Society for the Holy Child Jesus, and near Durham with the Youth Ministry Team). During this time they develop youth leadership groups and work in communities and schools, gaining skills themselves in leadership, developing their understanding of Social Justice around the world and aspects around global development, along with developing faith awareness in themselves and others.

In January/February 2013 participants take part in a 6 week placement in one of CAFOD’s (or CAFOD Partner) overseas projects (previous destinations have included Liberia, Nigeria, Ghana and Kenya). Living and working within the partner community, the gap year volunteers will experience first-hand the day-to-day reality of the communities, sharing together their experiences, learning from one another. This experience they then bring back and feed into their UK work placement, where they continue working for 4 months.

Step Into the Gap provides a unique prospect where participants get the chance to apply their current knowledge and skills as well as build greatly on them, increasing the scope of their CV with real life work experience, combined with a faith based overseas opportunity, a chance to live and work for 6 weeks on an overseas placement. This fully supported project (participants have board and lodgings provided throughout the programme, as well as a small weekly stipend) is currently recruiting. potential applicants should apply early as places on the programme are limited. Recruitment dates may change dependant on the numbers of applicants received. Applications received will be considered for start dates in September 2012.
