CATHOLIC WOMEN'S LEAGUE
Founded in 1905 by Margaret Fletcher a convert to Catholicism whose objectives were to promote religious, social and educational welfare in order to help Catholic women play a more active part in the church and in society. C.W.L is committed to helping people in Parishes, local communities and at National and International level.

Members work under the guidance of the Hierarchy and have always had the support of the Bishops and Parish priests. The League offers the opportunity to learn new skills. A Social Awareness team relates to Interfaith activities and Ecumenism, Relief and Refugees, Justice and Peace, Health, Youth and Family with particular reference to the disadvantaged groups in society.

Our Lady’s Catechists [O.L.C] runs correspondence courses for adults who wish to train as Catechists and for children who need religious instruction and preparation for the sacraments.

The Services Committee is concerned with Army, Navy and R.A.F Forces and their dependants with chaplains from all of these Services attending meetings.
The C.W.L has its own newspaper, published three times a year through which members are kept informed and updated.

The League has always been involved in International work. Margaret Fletcher having been a member of a committee which formed the World Union of Catholic Womens’ Organisations[WCWO].

All activities are based on a spiritual foundation. Every meeting begins with the League’s own prayers. The League’s patron is the York martyr St. Margaret Clitheroe whose feast day is Aug 30th. The Branch in Wales is called Cardiff Province Branch and Menevia. The League’s Centenary was Oct 2006. The C.W.L offers new members;

  • Scope for women with special skills and experience.

  • A satisfying interest with some time to spare.

  • An opportunity to help the less fortunate.

  • A chance to make new contacts.

  • A means to develop your spiritual life with all its blessings.

  • And a very warm welcome.

CO-WORKERS AND VOLUNTEERS OF BLESSED TERESA OF CALCUTTA

The Co-Workers and Volunteers of Blessed Teresa are those who see the presence of God in every human being and hence fully share in the real service of the poor using hands to serve and hearts to love. Blessed Teresa asks that we find those who need us, getting to know them personally, for it is only when we know the people that we can understand and love them. Then the Co-Workers and Volunteers can do the 'little things' for them, the little things that no-one else has time to do. For it is those things that you do to the least of His Brethren that you do to Him.

The Missionaries of Charity in Swansea joyfully request that any person within the Diocese who may be interested in finding out more about helping to further the work of the Sisters in the Diocese should contact:

THE GRAIL SECULAR INSTITUTE
This offers a particular way of life to single or widowed Catholic women. Those who belong make a formal commitment to live out their baptismal promises through the channel of the Grail and its mission.

There are two ways of belonging, as members of the Grail Community or as individual members, (Companions). All members seek to find God in their everyday life situations. Community members live together, expressing a simple uncluttered and celibate life-style. They aim to be open, to heal and to release the gifts of those they meet.
They are accountable to those with whom they live and see all that they undertake as enabling people to grow towards their full potential.
Companions of the Grail live independently and follow their chosen occupation. This makes specific demands on each person but also provides challenge, support and guidance. They meet regularly in area groups and aim to be alert to developments and needs in both Church and society so as to bring an informed response to daily situations.

Companions and the Grail Community spend time together each year to share more deeply the ethos and mission of the Grail. (see The Grail above).

PONTIFICAL MISSION SOCIETIES
The Pontifical Mission Societies (PMS) comprise the following societies:

  • the Association for the Propagation of the Faith (APF)

  • the Society of St Peter the Apostle (SPA)

  • the Society of the Holy Childhood (Mission Club)

  • the Mission Union (MU)

Together they form the principal organisation in the Church providing spiritual and financial support for missions overseas.

The Association for the Propagation of the Faith (APF)
The APF ensures that every Bishop in the Third World has the money he needs to enable his local priests and missionaries to preach the gospel effectively. Our members also help to build up the Church by their prayers. In each parish through our Diocese of Menevia, the APF has a Local Parish Secretary for the Society. This person enables members to make their contributions to the APF throughout the year. If you are interested in joining the APF as a new member, please contact your parish priest for the name of your local APF Parish Secretary.

The Society of the Holy Childhood
The society is also known now as the Mission Club whose motto is 'Children Helping Children'. The society encourages children to grow in the spirit of Mission. Every year our Diocesan Mission Club Organiser visits our primary schools with materials that enable the children to learn about missionary activity in a specific country and how they too can help by their prayers and by fundraising.

The Society of St Peter the Apostle
Third World countries have many vocations but not the finances to train them. The SPA is con¬cerned with helping through prayer and finance the younger churches to provide their own priests and religious. New members are asked to contact:

ST VINCENT DE PAUL SOCIETY
What we do: Help the needy, Feed the hungry, Clothe the naked, Help the homeless, Visit prisoners.

Help the needy - Helping Families and The Elderly: Visiting people and families in their home, in nursing homes or hospital, probably forms the majority of the work that the SVP members conduct.  The local volunteers will know the area - its problems and its opportunities - and can lend a helping hand where necessary.  The largest problem is perhaps loneliness.  An hour spent in chat means so much.

Clothe the naked: Many Conferences have access to a clothing store, enabling them to provide good quality clothing and footwear to people in need.

Free Legal Clinics: – free legal advice is available on housing benefit, family matters and disability living allowance. Clinics at Swansea at Walter Road, Penlan Community Centre, Blaenymaes Community Centre, and Bonymaen Community Centre.

Clydach Passion Play: The play is performed twice a week during Lent in churches all over the country. We are now booking for 2008. There is a cast of 40 and the play is a full costume drama.  If you would like the play performed in your church contact Peter for details.  All proceeds are used to fund Menevia Special works.

SECULAR FRANCISCAN ORDER
Saint Francis of Assisi left us 'a Dream to dream and a Journey to challenge everyone'.  All Franciscans are inspired by him to follow Christ.  The Secular Franciscan Order belongs to this family.  In their secular state, members permanently commit themselves to live the Gospel as St Francis did, following his Rule approved by the Pope.  The SFO is open to the laity and diocesan clergy.  There are more than 1,300 secular Franciscans in Great Britain.  Gathering in fraternities, they strive to grow in the love of God and in peace with each other.  In this way, they aspire to be faithful disciples of Christ.

OTHER SOCIETIES/ORGANISATIONS

Historic Churches Committee for Wales and Herefordshire Listed Churches

Churches are living buildings, existing to offer worship to God and serve the mission of the church. Their vital role is both for the present and the future, but like all things they have a history too. Having a place within the community, that heritage is recognised by the building being listed. Like many buildings, a proposal to list a church is made by English Heritage or Cadw. The rationale for the proposal may be on the grounds of historical, architectural or artistic merit. Listed buildings are classified in grades to show their relative importance:
Grade I     Buildings of exceptional, usually national interest.
Grade II*  Particularly important buildings of more than special interest.
Grade II    Buildings of special interest, which warrant every effort being made to preserve them.
